Global Reach
Americas
"In the Americas region of Lend Lease, sustainable growth implies economic expansion, social development and preservation of the environment, each fortifying the other. As an industry that uses the earth’s resources to construct our projects, we must be aware of our supply chain, reduce our environmental impacts, and be sensitive to those in the communities we work around. We believe that a sustainable organization is strategically and culturally committed to achieving economic and social development and environmental protection, this belief underlies all of our business decisions. Wherever we operate, the foundation of sustainable growth is a lasting association between human behavior and nature. Sustainability defines the way we do business now and into the future."

Project Management & Construction
Lend Lease's Project Management and Construction business, Bovis Lend Lease, has been operating in the United States since 1917. As the second-largest construction company in the US, with a network of offices across the country, we bring a full complement of staff, skills and resources to focus on sustainable development.
Together, we create innovative solutions that benefit our business, our local and global communities and the environment, which is why Bovis Lend Lease is the creative force behind many of America's green buildings.
In 2008, we were ranked fourth in the Top 100 Green Contractors, and our green building accredited projects have risen by nearly 70 percent. We recently established a dedicated sustainability business team to help build our capability and market share in the US green building market.
Snapshot
As one of the region's top green contractors, it has become increasingly important that Bovis Lend Lease Americas delivers sustainable business solutions consistently across the region.
To meet this new challenge, Bovis Lend Lease Americas formed a team of representatives from each Business Unit. Called the Sustainability Peer Group, its aim is to share talent and knowledge and to increase the level of business experience in sustainable building design, building technology innovation and business practices.
The Sustainability Peer Group is building relationships across the region, integrating ideas and ultimately establishing a set of common objectives. Since the program's development in 2007, the number of Green Building (LEED) Accredited Professionals in the region has grown by 163 percent. It has helped to secure more than 80 LEED and Green projects and located Green Star Certified office space for employees and business operations.
The program has streamlined communication methods, creating greater transparency of information, knowledge and experience. This collaborative approach has seen the program become a "go-to" for business enquiries regarding sustainability initiatives and information.
A number of achievements demonstrate the success of the peer group's capability development in the Americas business. These achievements include delivery of our first LEED Platinum project (the Home Depot Smart Home at Duke University—LEED version 2.2) to add to our list of LEED Gold Projects, and the first two LEED Accredited Professionals in Latin America.
Communities
For more than 50 years, Lend Lease has taken a leadership role in the creation and development of sustainable mixed-use communities around the world. And it's this same passion to make a difference that we are bringing to the first two Lend Lease Communities projects in the United States: Horizon Uptown and Lowry Range, located in the State of Colorado.
The United States has always featured prominently in Lend Lease's international portfolio. We are capitalising on a powerful network of expertise, talent and skill to deliver Horizon Uptown and Lowry Range.
Our creativity is the most responsible resource we have. We believe that Horizon Uptown and Lowry Range will play an important role in moving us towards a more sustainable future, setting new benchmarks in sustainable development and ensuring quality of life for future generations.
Snapshot
At Lend Lease Communities, we integrate and implement sustainability into everything we do. We aim to create and build communities, which enrich people's lives, socially, environmentally and economically. We strive to minimise our environmental impact, optimise the performance and well-being of our people and enhance our business competitiveness.
Sustainability has been an integral part of the planning process for Horizon Uptown. On completion, it will be the first truly sustainable, mixed-use development in Colorado, and its Welcome Center will be the city's first LEED Platinum building.
The project is one of a select group of sustainable developments nationwide chosen to participate in the US Green Building Council's innovative LEED for Neighborhood Design pilot program. The benchmarks set by the project team for this development will serve as a model for shaping the nation's leading sustainable neighbourhood standards in the future.
Horizon Uptown will combine residential, commercial and retail uses with a particular emphasis on environmental sustainability, community cohesion, lifelong learning and recreational opportunities. It will include more than 3,800 homes, 60 acres of parks and 1.3 million square feet of retail space. In addition, it will be a major regional economic development hub, with up to 11,000 jobs and four million square feet of commercial space.
Horizon will also offer learning services to the community. Lend Lease Communities has submitted a proposal to Aurora Public Schools for a new K-8 Pilot school at Horizon to be built on the central park, within easy walking distance of most homes. In addition, an innovative online community hub will offer shared facilities for a variety of educational, cultural, social and recreational organisations.

There will be low-water, drought-resistant landscaping throughout Horizon coupled with a highly efficient irrigation system.
With our second development, Lowry Range, we will aim for a zero net energy standard and establish it as the largest renewable energy community in the United States. Project Director Jeff Apitz and his team are collaborating with the Colorado State Land Board, National Renewable Energy Laboratory and the Governor's Energy Office to explore the use of solar as a major power source along with a mix of other renewable energy technologies.
Located over 3,870 acres, Lowry Range will feature a Main Street–style town centre and six neighbourhoods designed as walkable villages, anchored by schools, parks and shops. Approximately 1,100 acres will be set aside for conservation, open space and parks within the development, which is adjacent to an additional 17,000-acre state conservation area.
As part of the long-term development agreement with the State of Colorado, Lend Lease Communities will pay an estimated US$334 million in development proceeds to the Colorado Education Trust over the 20-year life of the project. Expanding the concept of sustainability beyond environmental measures, Lowry Range will also set the standard for sustainable development from an economic standpoint. It will be a regional economic engine, which means employment opportunities will drive the project so that residents have opportunities to work near their homes.
Lend Lease Communities continues to capitalise on the company's international experience, harnessing it to the best local talent in Colorado. Our aim is to bring an ambitious new standard of sustainable development to the State of Colorado and throughout the United States.
Lend Lease Investment Management & Public Private Partnerships
Lend Lease has a long history of property funds management, forming the first unlisted property trust in Australia and establishing one of Australia's longest-running listed property groups, General Property Trust.
Today, sustainable and responsible investment is a dynamic force in global financial markets. Lend Lease Investment Management believes in being a responsible and ethical business. We seek to make long-term investment decisions based on respect for the environment, social betterment and good corporate governance.
Today, Lend Lease Investment Management includes our Public Private Partnerships business. This comprises Actus Lend Lease in the US, the Private Finance Initiatives business in the UK and Public Private Partnerships projects in Spain and Italy.
Actus Lend Lease has developed an education program, designed in conjunction with Boston University, called SYNERGY (Saving Your Nation's Energy), which has been designed to educate communities, students and residents about the need for natural resource conservation and reduction in energy consumption.
Snapshot
Actus Lend Lease, through the Military Housing Privatisation Initiative, creates high-quality communities and homes for the US military, using proven private sector design, construction, financing, environmental practices and asset management processes.
The SYNERGY program combines grassroots activism across Actus Lend Lease communities with incentive-based programs and community education. SYNERGY provides an understanding of the impacts of energy usage and consumption, as well as techniques and methods to reduce total energy consumption.
Residents participate in year-round community events and receive a range of educational material including resources for children, such as colouring books, to help turn energy conservation into a family concern.
The resulting reduction in energy usage and utilities cost conserves natural resources and increases the economic return on the project. Programs like SYNERGY focus our efforts on long-term energy reduction and make good sustainable business sense while encouraging behavioural change.
In addition to the success of the SYNERGY program, we have launched the zero net homes energy pilot program, in partnership with the Army Corps of Engineers, to test feasibility of creating zero energy homes at scale throughout Lend Lease's portfolio. Actus Lend Lease was recently honoured to receive the national 2008 Energy Star Leadership in Housing Award.
