Lendlease Breakers cap off stellar season with International Women's Day

8 Mar 2018

At Lendlease, we are committed to gender equity, giving men and women the same chance to succeed. That’s why, around eight years ago, we formed a partnership with the Lendlease Breakers, the New South Wales women’s cricket team.

Last month the Breakers defeated Western Fury, claiming their 19th Women’s National Cricket League title in 22 years. Alyssa Healy brought home an impressive 122 runs, steering the Breakers to a 51-run win. At the same match, the team farewelled Captain Alex Blackwell – who has had an incredible career-innings spanning more than 14 years.

I was thrilled to join Alex at an International Women’s Day event hosted by the NSW Office of Sport to discuss our partnership and how we’re supporting a level playing field.

Over the time of our partnership with the Breakers, we’ve watched closely as the quality of the game has improved, while the provisions for players have not.

So, in October 2016, we were extremely proud to stand alongside Cricket NSW to expand our sponsorship of the Breakers at an event attended by Premier Berejiklian, Minister for Sport Stuart Ayres and Mrs Linda Hurley, wife of the NSW Governor and Patron of the Lendlease Breakers.

The partnership went to the heart of the matter – our commitment to giving women and men the same chance to succeed. It was about sharing our aspirations for our own industry and society to the world of sport.

We were incredibly proud to be at the forefront of this change with Cricket NSW as we expanded our sponsorship to professionalise the Breakers and lead a necessary journey towards gender equity in sport.

The work we are doing with the Breakers aligns with what we are doing at Lendlease with our Diversity & Inclusion program. To Lendlease, diversity simply means difference – difference in thinking, background, culture, sexual orientation, gender, ethnicity and other life experiences.

We acknowledge that while diversity is a fact, inclusion is a choice. Embracing diversity and fostering inclusion is fundamental to how we behave, day to day. This is simply the right thing to do.

We achieve better outcomes by encouraging difference and working together. We empower our leaders to be inclusive and address bias to make better decisions. We commit to a level playing field, giving everyone the same chance to succeed, and we encourage flexible ways of working to support different needs, priorities and lifestyles.

We look forward to continuing our support of the Lendlease Breakers’ journey in both their excellence on the field and addressing gender equity in the world of sport.

As Alex Blackwell said at the International Women’s Day event, “I’d like to see that sports don’t divide based on gender… That’s one of my passions, to see sports become completely gender blind.”

We are 100 per cent behind you.
