Promoting Mental Health in the Americas Region

3 Sep 2019

Lendlease Americas has proactively worked to understand the wide-ranging impacts of mental health in the construction industry, aiming to reduce the stigma associated with mental health and offering opportunities for upskilling and education. This case study relates to the Sustainability Framework in the area of Healthy Planet and People.

Why is this initiative important? Within the US, the construction industry has the highest rates of suicide of any industry. Lendlease has adopted a proactive approach and leadership role to help reduce stigma and offer support.

Key steps to make it happen: Within the Americas region, Lendlease has signed an MOU with the Construction Industry Alliance for Suicide Prevention (CIASP) to offer online and face-to-face suicide prevention training to organisations across the construction industry. This partnership also includes a seat on the Board of CIASP to ensure Lendlease plays a key role in suicide prevention across the industry.

This partnership aligns with Lendlease Americas work with Mental Health First Aid, Optum and Living Works, who have provided mental health and wellbeing training across our offices and sites.

Additionally, as a part of a larger safety campaign at Lendlease, the Americas team has worked to ensure mental wellbeing remains a key component to safety by implementing  ‘toolbox talk’ sessions. Focusing on mental health and suicide prevention, talks will be delivered on Lendlease sites across the country from September.

Impact to date: In September and October of 2018, Lendlease’s Oceanwide project in Los Angeles became the first location in the Americas to hold the Living Works suicide prevention training. This program was open to Lendlease staff and all project site subcontractors. Following this rollout, Lendlease hosted a panel discussion in December 2018 to discuss the prevalence of suicide in construction and local support available in Los Angeles. This event included panellists from CIASP, Living Works and Lendlease safety and site teams.
