The centre’s redevelopment included a 1.1 Megawatt (MW) solar array, consisting of over 2,700 solar panels. This solar array will reduce CO2 emissions by over 1,400 tonnes per year compared to electricity sourced from the grid and will deliver significant operational cost savings. The solar array will enable the centre to achieve a 5 Star NABERS Energy rating where 3.5 star is the industry average.
Considered design choices incorporated the Cornmeal Creek and local mangrove habitats which surround and run through the center. With boardwalks designed to allow for visitor interactions with the natural environment which was protected and maintained during redevelopment efforts.
Engagement with the community also played a critical role in the development’s design, with ample outdoor open space catering to the active, outdoor lifestyle that residents and visitors to the Sunshine Coast enjoy. Sunshine Plaza will also feature a high ropes course above Cornmeal Creek that will attract residents and visitors with an experiential offering and maintaining the connection to the creek.
