Cost Planning, Building, 201 cohort graduate

1. What project are you currently working on?

I am currently working on Martin Place Metro Over Station Development having just come off Circular Quay Tower.

2. What are your day to day activities?

As a Graduate Cost Planner, my day to day role is to support the Cost Planning team as well as other members of the integrated project team with all things relating to the project's budget, cost planning project briefs and drawings as well as value engineering tenders to assist in the winning of work.

3. What are 1-2 things you wish you knew before you started?

Your seniors and team members are there to support you through the graduate program so don't be afraid to speak out if you have any questions about your rotations and what is expected of you as a graduate. Seek feedback, wherever possible, on your personal performance as you rotate through projects and business units. This will assist in your development and understanding of your interactions with your team members and the project role at large. Scheduling regular coffee catch-ups is a great way to have informal discussions with your manager or seniors.

4. What has been the most rewarding professional experience since joining Lendlease?

The most rewarding professional experience was participating in the Chatswood School Engagement Program with my peers, talking with students about the construction industry and inspiring young students to explore career prospects within the building sector.

Site Engineer, Building, 2018 cohort graduate

Catherine, Graduate 2018 Cohort

1. What project are you currently working on?

During my first rotation earlier this year I worked on the Group 2 and Group 3 Works contracts at the Australian Parliament House. The Group 2 contract is in Delivery Phase and is focused on upgrading the glazing around the building to ballistic-proof glass, upgrading the skylights (shown right), erecting the security fence around the perimeter of the building, as well as other internal refurbishment works. The Group 3 contract is in Planning Phase and is focused on the Forecourt Redevelopment, Carpark Upgrade and Emergency Generator Upgrade. As part of my second rotation I have recently moved to R5R6 which is an infrastructure upgrade project involving various demolition and upgrade works around the compound.

2. What are your day to day activities?

I have recently moved into my new role at R5R6 as part of my second rotation and have taken the lead in organising the close-out of RFI’s, chairing the Design Meetings, and starting to take control of my first package: Glazing! I have also taken carriage of updating the Noticeboard in our public compound, and help to organise the “Subby of the Month BBQ.” I am also Head of ACT Ausgrads and co-ordinate graduate events, such as the Canberra Site Tour (shown right).

3. What are 1-2 things you wish you knew before you started?

One thing I wish I knew before I started was that it is okay to be strong and speak your mind as long as your are polite about it. Also, sometimes you will find yourself in situations where you are dealing with tricky people, or in a high pressure situation at work, but know that it will pass and life goes on – what will remain is how you handled the situation and if you have learned enough to know how to get through it again.

4. What has been the most rewarding professional experience since joining Lendlease?

The most rewarding professional experience I have had since joining Lendlease has been taking control of trade packages and working with my assigned subcontractors to resolve deign co-ordination issues with consultants and other subcontractors, and establish their safety and quality control documentation in line with Lendlease protocol to a high standard. Being able to have a positive influence on how a trade progresses throughout the job in the smoothest way possible is incredibly satisfying. It’s a very exciting process to take the lead on and I am looking forward to seeing the final product of what I have helped build at the end of the project.
