Sod turn marks start of construction at National Security Office Precinct

  • 12 Mar 2025

Canberra, 12 March 2025: In partnership with the Department of Finance, Lendlease has started construction at the National Security Office Precinct in Barton, marked by an official sod turn and smoking ceremony.

Once completed, the National Security Office Precinct will provide a permanent solution to the critical accommodation and capability requirements of several national security and other Commonwealth agencies, with space for up to 5,000 workers.

The Precinct is a significant project for the area and will support more than 10,000 jobs in the industry over the five-year construction period, including over 200 apprentices. It will also provide important career pathways for learning, in particular specialty trades like security and structural, and help address the acute skills shortage in the construction industry.

Lendlease has been part of Canberra’s growth for over 70 years and has partnered with the Australian Government on delivering a number of key projects in that time.

“Construction has officially kicked off on the National Security Office Precinct which is in part a result of working with the Department of Finance to collaborate on the best approach to deliver this project.

“We have a long legacy of construction work in Canberra and will continue to leverage our sector expertise in delivering this project of national significance.”

Quotes attributable to Senator the Hon Katy Gallagher, Minister of Finance

“This is a very significant build for the nation’s capital, but also a very important construction project for the city of Canberra.

“There’ll be thousands of workers on this site, 10,000 overall through the course of the project, and importantly, opportunities for about over 200 apprentices run by Lendlease, which also has a great program to support women in construction.”
