Project vision
Brisbane Showgrounds’ focus is on creating a future-facing lifestyle destination while preserving the past, reducing its carbon footprint, recycling materials and honouring the site’s heritage in innovative ways. The development boasts Green Building certifications that demonstrate leadership in sustainability.
Innovation in construction techniques has been a vital part of the precinct’s creation and has seen the delivery of 25 King, Queensland’s first and, at the time of construction in 2018, Australia’s tallest engineered timber office building. 25 King was awarded Best Building in the World (new building under 100m) in the 2021 Council of Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat Annual Awards. The construction technique of using preassembled engineered wood boasts a number of sustainability benefits. Timber buildings tend to be 30 to 50 per cent lighter and 30 per cent quicker to construct compared to concrete buildings. Research also indicates health benefits for those working in timber buildings, including decreased blood pressure and general improvements in wellbeing.
The project aims to provide space for community to flourish with weekly free wellness and fitness sessions, the King Street Book Club, community newsletters, a community grants program and sponsored events occurring within the precinct. Brisbane Showgrounds has also supported local high school students with hands-on learning opportunities facilitated by Lendlease design experts.
