Cairns Central's trade area experiences a large number of tourists and has an estimated population of 232,540 as of June 2018, which is forecast to grow at an average annual rate of 1.4% reaching 267,940 by 2026. The average age of the resident population is 38.3. The Average household income is $83,784 with 53.1% percentage of population with dependent children.

The Cairns Central total trade area is defined to include two primary sectors, two secondary sectors and three tertiary sectors. The total trade area extends 80 km to the north and south and 50 km to the west. The extensive trade area reflects the dominant position the Cairns CBA plays within the Far North Queensland Statistical Division, recognising the role of the centre as the major regional centre in Far North Queensland. 38% of centre sales are derived from outside the defined trade area, highlighting the importance of the tourist market to centre trade.
