Only about 56% of this glass is recycled. Lendlease Engineering received a grant from Lismore Council, through the NSW Environment Protection Authority’s Civil Construction Market Program, to use recycled crushed glass as a key component of pavement concrete on the Woolgoolga to Ballina Pacific Highway Upgrade NSW. In total, 2000 cubic metres of recycled glass concrete pavement was laid over four days of paving, using over 220 tonnes of glass from local landfill. This sustainability initiative was a first for Lendlease Engineering and for main line pavement on Pacific Highway Projects. Such was the success of utilising the recycled crushed glass, and has encouraged other projects to follow the Pacific Highway team’s lead, and continue the successful integration of environmentally progressive materials on pavement projects. This project was supported by NSW EPA as part of Waste Less, Recycle More, funded from the waste levy.
