Trialling Renewable Diesel at Glen Parva

Lendlease was appointed to build a new prison at Glen Parva in Leicestershire, in August 2020. In partnership with the Ministry of Justice, we will be using cutting-edge technology and off-site construction to make our building speedier and more environmentally friendly by minimising waste. Our approach to sustainability at Glen Parva aligns us fully to the UK Government's commitment to build back better and greener. 

The team at Glen Parva is making progress on reducing the project’s carbon footprint by piloting the use of Enhanced Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (D+HVO fuel) to replace diesel in generators. HVO is a fossil-free, paraffinic fuel made from 100% renewable raw materials. It is produced from waste fats and vegetable oil that has been transformed into biofuel by hydrogenation. 

Using D+HVO fuel eliminates up to 90% of greenhouse gas emissions (CO2e emissions) and produces significantly lower NOx and carbon monoxide emissions than traditional diesel. 

The Glen Parva project won’t just be environmentally friendly, we want it to be genuinely sustainable and will be providing benefits for the local community too.

We aim to do this by: 

• Creating 100 new jobs during construction, 25% of these will go to ex-offenders or prisoners released on temporary license. 
• Offering 50 apprenticeships onsite. 
• Committing to employing at least 25% of people onsite from the local area. 
• Allocating 30% of our spend to SMEs.
• Committing 25% of our spend to businesses within a 50-mile radius of the site. 
• Creating c.600 permanent jobs once the prison becomes operational.

Using low-carbon alternative fuels such as HVO is one example of how Lendlease is making progress towards achieving our goal to be Net Zero Carbon by 2025 for Scope 1 and 2, and Absolute Zero Carbon by 2040. As part of our Roadmap to Absolute Zero Carbon we are committed to eliminating diesel entirely from our construction sites and will be increasing the use of alternative technologies and fuels across our projects as we strive to achieve this.
