Plans for landmark pavilion are given the go-ahead

Southwark Borough Council has signed off on plans for the triangular pavilion, which will feature a spectacular public roof terrace centred around a mature London Plane tree in the heart of the park. The building will also include new community space and food and beverage kiosks. Construction work is due to begin shortly with the aim of completing work on the pavilion, which was designed by Bell Phillips Architects, in summer 2021.
Elephant Park is a £2.5bn regeneration project where thousands of new homes are being delivered by Lendlease in partnership with Southwark Council within Zone One of central London.
Sustainability and community have been key considerations of the design process. The structure of the pavilion will be constructed from cross-laminated timber and sustainably sourced timber used for the cladding and decking, while a new community space and public roof terrace will be important new community assets for local people.
Lendlease’s Project Director at Elephant Park, Kristy Lansdown said: “This fabulous and distinctive new building is set to become a real landmark within Elephant Park and for the local community. The designs complement the surrounding landscape and celebrate the existing trees, which are a huge natural asset. It will become the focal point of our new park and play a major part in supporting its public use at a time when green space in cities is becoming more and more valued.”
