A new prison that utilises the latest designs and innovations to boost security, rehabilitate offenders and protect the public has been shortlisted for a prestigious award. HMP Fosse Way is in the running to pick up Project of the Year in the over £50m category at The Construction News Awards, which showcase and celebrate the very best in the industry.

Lendlease was appointed to build HMP Fosse Way as part of the Ministry of Justice's Estates Transformation Programme. The international real estate group has been nominated for the award alongside the lead designer for the project, Pick Everard, and PCE Ltd who delivered the superstructure and façade.

HMP Fosse Way has been celebrated for its innovative approach to rehabilitative design; with a strong focus on sustainability, prisoner rehabilitation, and community impact. It’s also the greenest prison ever constructed in the UK, thanks to greener fuels, renewable energy and electric construction machinery.

David Cadiot, Lendlease’s Executive General Manager for construction in the UK regions, said: "We’ve a proven track record of delivering projects to the very highest standards and with economic, social and environmental benefits in the communities where we work. At HMP Fosse Way we’ve exceeded all of our targets in relation to sustainability and social value; and it’s been particularly satisfying to have created 485 new jobs of which 67 are former prisoners or those near to release.

“We’ve also provided 65 apprenticeships and spent over £475,000 on voluntary, community or social enterprise throughout the project. It’s been an outstanding project and one we’re proud to have delivered for the Ministry of Justice.”

Winning a Construction News Award is a well-recognised badge of excellence amongst clients and peers. Award categories celebrate amazing projects, technical innovations and forward-thinking companies including the biggest contractors and businesses in the sector.

Entries are all judged by an independent panel of over 70 major clients and industry figures, who ensure integrity and rigour in the awards process. The winners will be announced on 11 July.

HMP Fosse Way was completed within the stipulated timeline and budget. The safety record at the project has also been recognised as 3,500,000 working hours were completed on site without a critical incident. The project created more than 485 jobs and generated employment for 67 serving prisoners and ex-offenders with suppliers on the project. The name of the prison was selected by the local community and reflects the history of the area – the Fosse Way is a Roman road that runs through Leicestershire.

Ali Ratcliffe, director at Pick Everard, said: “HMP Fosse Way reflects a new standard for prison design that Pick Everard is incredibly proud to help deliver. It incorporates biophilic and salutogenic principles alongside a wealth of prisoner services, including a gym, library and classrooms, which are designed to positively shape rehabilitation efforts. It is also the most energy efficient in operation, with offsite manufacturing and renewable energy generation helping drive net zero efforts across the Ministry of Justice estate.”
