Lendlease employees give back to Singapore communities in 23rd annual Community Day
- 3 Oct 2018
The latest addition to Community Day was “plogging”, a combination of jogging and picking up litter that has become a global trend in recent years. The activity garnered over 50 ploggers running approximately 4.5 km alongside East Cost Park this morning, with the waste collected segregated for recycling.
Another activity took place at Willing Hearts, a soup kitchen that distributes 5,000 meals daily to over 40 locations island-wide. Some 40 volunteers donned aprons, and helped pack and prepare meals that benefitted the elderly, the disabled, migrant workers and low-income families.
For the fourth year, more than 60 volunteers came together to tend to the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) Community Herb Garden, which grows more than 300 types of herbs and tropical plants with natural medicinal properties. The garden has benefited people from all walks of life since 2009.
Commenting on the day’s activities, Michael Long, Head of Sustainability, Asia said: “Since its inception in 1996, Community Day has been a big part of our history and culture. We believe that these activities provide a platform for our employees to apply their experience and skills to make a difference, and bring positive contribution to our local communities, which in turn creates a synergy across work, community, and personal well-being.”
Other community projects led by employees in Singapore include:
The House Keepers at Thye Hua Kwan
Staff volunteers participated in a day of spring cleaning at the Thye Hua Kwan Senior Activity Centre in Bedok in late September, ahead of the centre’s opening that took place on 1 October 2018.
Community Outreach with Thye Hua Kwan
Volunteers interacted with the seniors at the Senior Activity Centre, which is like their second home. Through engaging activities with the seniors, these volunteers brought many smiles to the seniors’ faces.
Bringing a smile to the Community with GoodLife@Marine Parade
To enrich the lives of senior citizens, volunteers joined GoodLife!, a network of programs managed by Montfort Care that commits to improving the lives of individuals, families, and the community facing transitional challenges through various activities.
Recycling with The Community at Yuhua Senior Activity Centre
Volunteers from Lendlease came together to share different creative and fun ways of turning sorted trash into something useful for the household, thus raising awareness on recycling to the senior community. These seniors were also brought on a tour to the Food Waste Recycling Centre @ Tampines Hub to gain insights into food waste processing in Singapore.
This year, over 3,000 people from Asia, Australia, the United States and Europe are taking part in more than 200 Community Day projects, volunteering alongside their colleagues, community partners, families and suppliers to bring positive impact to their local communities.
