Lendlease’s The Exchange TRX commitment to raising the bar on safety and wellbeing delivers 5 million safe work hours

  • 23 Jun 2019
Brendan Walker, Project Director of Lendlease’s The Exchange TRX said: “Achieving 5 million safe work hours is a significant milestone for Lendlease on any of our projects. What matters to us is that our workers get to go home safely at the end of a productive work day. This is not a simple matter given the scale and scope of a mega-project like The Exchange TRX; it requires rigorous application and adherence to health and safety standards and the innovative use of the latest technology to ensure we keep our workers safe and productive.”

“By being a supportive workplace that cares for our workers, we will be able to improve their lives and enable them to be more productive. We believe that when we’ve got our workers’ backs, by enabling them to feel safe and secure on the worksite, they will in turn focus on safety, and are empowered to  go beyond the minimum and innovate, to implement even higher standards where possible. Thus, safety is not just a “corporate responsibility” for us, we believe it’s a real differentiator for our projects,” he adds.

Culture of Care: Lendlease’s focus on people, safety and welfare
Creating a better future for its people and communities are at the heart of Lendlease’s vision ‘to create the best places’. That includes actively caring for its people, their health and wellbeing, as well as their safety. To achieve this, several frameworks have been put in place, including:

Health and Wellbeing Framework: A ‘People First’ approach
  • A biometric entry system that tracks work hours to ensure workers do not exceed the maximum hours and allows the site management to track the ratio of supervisors to workers on site to ensure adequate frontline supervision.
  • On-site welfare facilities:
    • Sheltered canteen for workers
    • Well-equipped rest areas
    • Toilets with shower facilities
    • First aid room where basic health checks are carried out for all workers and for those unwell to rest and recuperate
    • Lift for the disabled
    • Fresh food options
    • Prayer room
    • Filtered water stations
Lendlease’s commitment to deliver projects and to operate in an incident and injury free environment
  • Lendlease’s Global Minimum Requirements (GMRs) Framework sets out the minimum environment, health and safety (EHS) standards designed to control risks associated with its operations. Lendlease’s GMRs apply to the entire lifecycle of a project – even before bidding for a job – ensuring that EHS principles are at the heart of everything we do.
  • The GMRs apply to all Lendlease operations. This includes all Lendlease projects, developments, assets, joint ventures (JVs), partnerships, multi-site teams, facilities and offices.
  • On-site application:
    • Pedestrian walkways are physically separated from vehicular accessways, with crossings clearly marked, to minimize the risk of accidents.
    • Voyager System - contractors book deliveries in and out of the site using an electronic system, which enables real time delivery tracking in an effort to minimize vehicles on site, reducing the risk of accidents and driving logistics efficiency.
Making construction smarter and safer using Technology
Lendlease, an industry leader in innovation and digital construction, is transforming the construction industry by integrating digital technologies and processes in every aspect of project delivery, from design and construction to commissioning and operation.
  • On-site application:
    • Usage of drones to improve site surveillance and in turn enhance project quality and planning, as well as safety. Drone aerial photography gives a better understanding of construction progress and equipment utilization on project site.
    • 360-degree cameras and Go-Pro cameras are used to capture immersive views of the construction site to create virtual site walks for safety induction training and allowing observation of construction activity without risk or disruption to the site activity.
    • Beacons and wearable tags are used to monitor the movement of workers on-site.
    • iAlert system that alerts paramedics to the exact location of workers and over 20 nurse call button stations around the site.
Diana Ahmad Kamal Baharin, Safety Supervisor, who joined Lendlease after she completed the Safety Supervisor Apprenticeship program, said: “I truly enjoy coming to work every day. A construction site has the potential to be a dangerous place but I feel safe working here because of all the safety frameworks, guidelines and facilities that have been implemented. We’ve also received positive feedback from our colleagues and I am assured that Lendlease always puts our safety and wellbeing first.”

Hossain Ahmed, a construction worker on The Exchange TRX site said: “I have been working on the project for over 3 years and I feel safe working here as the facilities are complete and good. It feels more like a house than a workplace and we all feel like a family. We all know that the company takes care of us and want us to be safe at work all the time. Personally, I appreciate the prayer room for Muslim workers and the fresh food that is prepared at our canteen.”

“We are proud of this achievement and it is the result of our commitment to the health and safety of our workers. This milestone will be our motivation to continue to do more for our people,” added Walker.

The Exchange TRX, a 17-acre mixed-use development that comprises a hotel, campus style office, 6 residential towers and a large scaled retail destination crowned by a 10-acre rooftop park, is supported by excellent infrastructure and unrivalled connectivity, including a purpose built MRT station with the only interchange of two MRT lines in the city as well as direct access to major highways and arterial roads across Kuala Lumpur.
