Lendlease Engineering secures the major earthworks contract at Western Sydney International Airport
- 5 Sep 2019
This extensive package of works includes delivery of the detailed design and construction of earthworks and drainage for the new airport, as well as topographical design for the entire airport precinct. It is one of Australia’s largest ever bulk earthworks infrastructure projects to be awarded outside of the mining sector.
Lendlease Engineering is Australia’s leading earthworks civil contracting business. Operating one of the largest fleets of earthmoving equipment in the country, Lendlease Engineering will deploy its specialist fleet of plant to deliver the project. More than 35 heavy dump trucks and 60 scrapers will move up to 75,000 cubic metres of material per day to excavate and place a total of 25 million cubic metres of earth throughout the project.
Dale Connor, the CEO of Lendlease Building and Engineering, said, “Lendlease has a long history of participating in the development of Western Sydney and we look forward to delivering this next stage of the Western Sydney International project”.
“As Western Sydney’s future aerotropolis, the work on Western Sydney International will be a major contributor to the economic and social development of the region. This project gives Lendlease the ability to provide further skills, training and employment opportunities across Western Sydney, with up to 500 people expected to work on this significant stage in the delivery of the airport.”
Gavin Reymond, NSW Executive General Manager for Lendlease Engineering, said, “Our work in Western Sydney has allowed us to support more than 5,000 local residents in our skilling and employment training centres already operating in the region. Securing this package of works allows us to further embed our strong presence in Western Sydney and continue to support its growth.”
The airport is being developed in stages by the Federal Government-owned Western Sydney Airport in response to passenger demand. Stage 1 will see a single runway airport constructed with capacity for up to 10 million passengers a year.
This project win adds to Lendlease Engineering’s comprehensive range of major transport projects across Australia. Lendlease Engineering has recently been awarded several major contracts, including the Southern Program Alliance Additional Works Package in Victoria, together with the Wells Crossing to Glenugie Section of the Pacific Highway W2B Upgrade in New South Wales.
Lendlease and CPB Contractors are equal Joint Venture partners for the first package of works currently underway at Western Sydney Airport, which commenced in September 2018.
This new Bulk Earthworks package will commence early next year and is scheduled to be completed in 2022.
