Cairns Central total trade area has an estimated population of 241,360 as of June 2019, which is forecast to grow at an average annual rate of 1.3% reaching 282,490 by 2031. The centre also benefits from the large tourist population visiting the Cairns region. The average age of the main trade area population is 37.1 years. The main trade area average household income is $87,476 with 55.3% percentage of population with dependent children.

The Cairns Central total trade area is defined to include two primary sectors, two secondary sectors and three tertiary sectors. The total trade area extends 80 km to the north and south and 50 km to the west. The extensive trade area reflects the dominant position the Cairns CBA plays within Far North Queensland, recognising the role of the centre as the major regional centre for the region. A high proportion of centre sales come from outside the defined trade area, highlighting the importance of the tourist market to centre trade.
