Did you know steelmaking is currently one of the biggest emitters of CO2 globally? The steel sector accounts for 7-9% of global greenhouse gas emissions and around 30-35% of Lendlease’s supply chain (Scope 3) emissions.

As part of our commitment to be a 1.5ºC aligned company, Lendlease is one of the first companies to join SteelZero, a global initiative aimed at driving market demand for net zero carbon steel.

To achieve our ambition to be a 1.5ºC aligned company, our Scope 3 emissions associated with our projects must be zero by 2040. The SteelZero initiative helps us work alongside suppliers to support transformation in steel manufacturing which assists us in reaching this target.

About SteelZero

SteelZero is led by international non-profit organisation, The Climate Group, who are working in partnership with ResponsibleSteel to bring major steel-using organisations from a range of sectors together to speed up the transition to a net zero carbon steel industry.

In the first initiative of its kind, SteelZero members make a public commitment to procure only 100% net zero carbon steel by 2050.

As part of our membership, we commit to procure:

• 50% Net Zero emission steel by 2030
• 100% Net Zero emission steel by 2040

“Sustainability has always been a part of how we do business at Lendlease and we’re committed to tackling the climate crisis head-on,” said Cate Harris, Lendlease Group Head of Sustainability and Lendlease Foundation. “Last year we launched our new, bold sustainability targets to live in a world warmed by no more than 1.5ºC and to be responsible for creating measured social value on this journey.

“There’s never been a more important time for our industry to come together to set ambitious global targets and collaborate to drive meaningful action. Important initiatives such as SteelZero create pathways towards achieving these targets and supporting industry transformation.”
