The commitment was made within weeks of Lendlease announcing a far-reaching new global target of becoming a 1.5 °C aligned company. It means Lendlease recognises that, in order to minimise the impact of climate change on livelihoods and ecosystems around the world, global temperatures must be prevented from rising above 1.5 °C.
To achieve that goal the company has committed to take action to radically reduce its carbon emissions. Those actions include achieving Net Zero Carbon for scope 1 emissions, produced by the combustion of gas and diesel; and scope 2 emissions from electricity by 2025. And to achieve Absolute Zero Carbon, eliminating all of its emissions, by 2040.
Lendlease has defined five clear milestones to decarbonisation. These are:
1. Creating a decarbonisation investment strategy in 2021.
2. Phasing out diesel and gas from operations.
3. Using 100 per cent renewable electricity by 2030.
4. Collaborating with supply chain partners to set pathways to achieve absolute zero carbon by 2040.
5. Collaborating with tenants and residents to transition to renewable electricity and achieve absolute zero carbon by 2040.

Lendlease is already demonstrating its commitment to addressing climate change at major developments such as International Quarter London, where 2 Redman Place achieved the second highest BREEAM Outstanding score for a commercial building in the UK. BREEAM is the world’s leading sustainability assessment method for master planning projects, infrastructure and buildings. It recognises and reflects the value in sustainability across the built environment.
In 2019, the company also celebrated its fourth year as the UK’s most sustainable housebuilder in the NextGeneration Sustainability Benchmark; and became the first property and construction company in the world to join ResponsibleSteel, demonstrating its commitment to procuring sustainable and ultimately zero carbon steel.
