Project vision
HMP Fosse Way is part of the Ministry of Justice's Estates Transformation Programme, and the prison will host 1,680 offenders when complete. Lendlease was appointed to build the prison at Glen Parva in Leicestershire, in August 2020. Completion is currently forecasted for Q1 2023.
In partnership with the Ministry of Justice, we have been using cutting-edge technology and off-site construction to make our building speedier and more environmentally friendly by minimising waste.
In total, the project team expected to:
- create 100 new jobs during construction, 25% of these will go to ex-offenders or prisoners released on temporary license.
- offer 50 apprenticeships onsite.
- allocate 25% of spending to businesses within a 50-mile radius of the site.
The team at Glen Parva have made great progress on reducing the project’s carbon footprint by piloting the use of Enhanced Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (D+HVO fuel) to replace diesel in generators. HVO is a fossil-free, paraffinic fuel made from 100% renewable raw materials. It is produced from waste fats and vegetable oil that has been transformed into biofuel by hydrogenation. Using D+HVO fuel eliminates up to 90% of greenhouse gas emissions (CO2e emissions) and produces significantly lower NOx and carbon monoxide emissions than traditional diesel.
Following this trial on UK sites, Lendlease Europe introduced our Alternative Fuels Policy which mandated that every UK construction site should use alternative fuels like HVO instead of diesel, petrol or other fossil fuels by January 2022.
