Lendlease launches EV-charging program across multiple privatized military housing communities.

New initiative supports eco-friendly living and builds on sustainability infrastructure at multiple military installations.

(Nashville, Tenn., February 5, 2024) Lendlease, a global integrated real estate group that owns and manages more than 40,000 homes for the U.S. military, today announced a new initiative giving residents of its privatized military housing communities the opportunity to have Level 2 electric vehicle (EV) chargers installed at their homes. The program partners with TRO Energy Solutions (TROES), a national provider of EV charging services, to cover the cost of installation, setup and maintenance of the individual Level 2 charging stations, which are safer, more efficient and faster than other charging alternatives.

As part of a phased launch, the EV charging program was initially piloted in late 2023 at two Lendlease military housing communities: Soaring Heights Communities at Davis Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, Ariz., and Cavalry Family Housing at Fort Cavazos near Killeen, Texas.  The program rollout will continue in 2024 at Atlantic Marine Corps Communities at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point in Havelock, N.C.; Hickam Communities in Honolulu, serving Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam; and Island Palm Communities, which comprises multiple communities serving seven military installations on Oahu, Hawaii. Lendlease will use findings from the pilot to identify additional opportunities to expand the program across its portfolio.

“Our goal is always to offer amenities and services that support service members and their families, and as the adoption rate of electric vehicles continues to increase, this initiative makes it easier and more cost-effective for our residents to own an EV,” said Justin Kern, Executive General Manager, Lendlease Communities. “Not only can residents with an EV rely on the convenience and efficiency of Level 2 charging at their own home, but as more residents opt into the program, we’ll also be building an infrastructure in these communities that supports sustainable living in the future and aligns with Lendlease’s broader sustainability goals, including our commitment to achieve absolute zero carbon by 2040.”

The Level 2 chargers are installed in private garages or carports, with residents enrolling in a monthly charging subscription for ongoing usage. Operating at 240 volts, the Level 2 chargers provide twice the output of Level 1 charging, in which an EV is plugged directly into a home electrical outlet. This results in much faster charging time, with full charge achieved within hours. As Level 2 charging uses specialized, industry-recognized connectors, it is also the safer option for residents.

“We are proud to partner with Lendlease to support military families with our convenient and affordable in-home EV charging solutions,” said Edward DeVries, president of TRO Energy Solutions, Inc. “We will keep their vehicles powered up with reliable equipment and our simple-to-use ChargeTime app that provides interactive data through the resident’s mobile device. Our respect for military service members runs deeply through our company; we are honored to support those who bravely serve our country and their families.”

The EV charger program is the latest in a range of sustainability features and infrastructure Lendlease has introduced at communities in its military housing portfolio, including solar energy systems, high-efficiency replacements and upgrades to HVAC and other mechanical systems, and other energy- and water-conservation initiatives.
