    Environment

    Climate Action
Regenerating the Natural Environment. 1 Java will regenerate and enliven an unused piece of the Brooklyn, New York, waterfront through strategic placemaking and  sustainable design. While the project is still in the pre-development stage, future adaptability design explorations show an  opportunity to create an all-electric building with the help of innovations such as geothermal heating and cooling and potential on-site solar and battery storage capabilities. A Climate Related Risk Assessment was undertaken during design phase to optimize the built environment’s resilience to the impacts of climate change.

    Nature & Pollution
Prioritizing Waterfront Resilience. The project design team is utilizing the Waterfront Alliance’s Waterfront Edge Design Guidelines (WEDG) to create an accessible space that connects the community to the waterfront through diverse outdoor spaces, embraces native birds, and prioritizes native planting along the riverfront.

    Resources & Materials
The design of 1 Java Street prioritizes reuse and longevity. A proposed greywater irrigation system will help to maintain and strengthen the natural ecosystem at the waterfront. Low carbon building materials can further improve the quality of life at 1 Java.

    Social

    Community Inclusion
Community integration and support. The 1 Java team is in the process of engaging the broader Greenpoint community to understand how we can meet the existing retail and event space needs. Additionally, the welcoming and inclusive waterfront park will be designed with biodiversity and health in mind - providing access to healthy foods and education with native plantings and urban gardens.

    Economic Prosperity
Engaging the community. The 1 Java project team prioritizes community engagement and economic prosperity. The project team is working to develop partnerships with local non-profits to encourage local hiring, including diverse, minority, and underemployed communities. Local training and apprenticeship programs will not only strengthen the project, but also the local industry by supporting the pipeline of skilled workers.

    Wellbeing
Future-forward design that supports evolving lifestyles. The 1 Java project design incorporates health and wellbeing into all aspects of the building.
